Step-by-step method for creating a survey

You are here: Home>Resources>Create Surveys

Use surveys in your business

Surveys lead to information, information leads to decisions.
Running a business without information is like driving blindfolded.

  • Do you know what your customers want, who they are, how they came to you and why some are not coming back? Just ask!
  • Are your prices too high? too low? If you don't know, ask!
  • Are your customers expecting services you could be providing - and earning revenue for? To know the answer, all you have to do is ask!

These are some of the questions that you should know the answers to, for the past, the present and the future. It is part of "Marketing 101".

The 3 steps to creating a survey are:
1- define what you want to know:
See the questions I asked you earlier. You have to make sure you are sticking to your client's needs and not discover one day that 20% of your clients are not coming back.

2- write down your questions
If you have not done a survey before, it takes a little practice. Subscribing to a cash for survey service is a good way of seeing professionally designed surveys.
You want to leave room for comments if your questions are qualitative and you are looking for input. If you want to test ideas, ask closed questions that call for an answer like "yes or no", a rating (on a scale of 1-5, how would you rate your satisfaction with XYZ?). Make sure the whole survey flows. It is a good idea to test it with people who will give you honest feedback (someone you don't know well).

3- administer the survey
Once you are ready, send it out. It is best to do it online because the data is collected and analyzed for you, and you don't have to corner people to force the survey on them when they are not available.

You might think "oh, but I can ask the questions myself". It is actually better to send it out rather than call up your clients or prospects so people won't be influenced by your tone of voice. And you can save the high cost of a specialized consultant if you get a user-friendly web system that is low cost or free.

Here are two of the top providers of such online services that allow you to craft and modify your own questionnaires and analyze the results:
